Uzdrowisko Ustroń Health Resort

Sanatoryjna 1, 43-450 Ustroń, Śląskie

Uzdrowisko Ustroń is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe. It is a company that boasts long tradition, use of natural resources, such as brine and peloid, and a modern approach to rehabilitation.

Since August 2011, the majority shareholder of Przedsiębiorstwo Uzdrowiskowe “Ustroń” SA has been American Heart of Poland S.A. The Polish State Treasury sold the shares in Uzdrowisko Ustroń for over PLN 90 million. American Heart of Poland is a company of a well-established brand and with phenomenal success in cardiology and cardiac surgery. It was set up in 2000 by a group of outstanding physicians from Poland and the United States who were motivated by an idea of spreading the state-of-the-art methods of treating cardiovascular diseases. The new owner of Uzdrowisko Ustroń set itself a goal of developing that place and every zloty it earns it reinvests in it.

Uzdrowisko Ustroń combines tradition with modernity. Spa tradition in Ustroń dates back to the late 18th century when people found that climate conditions and local therapeutic resources favoured the treatment of respiratory system, rheumatologic and joint and muscle diseases as well as exhaustion, and, additionally, sped up recovery after diseases and injuries.

After ironworks were built in the second half of the 18th century, they used white-hot blast-furnace slag to run baths. The construction of a swimming house and a spa house started in the late 19th century. That was following the discovery of rich peloid deposits. The national insurance institution took over the health resort facilities in 1945–1946. Then, Państwowe Przedsiębiorstwo Uzdrowiskowe (or the State Spa Enterprise) in Jastrzębie-Zdrój took over the swimming house; however, the decision to build mines in the Rybnik-Jastrzębie-Zdrój Coal Area entailed liquidation of spa treatment in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, which led to the rebirth of the health resort in Ustroń. Further development stimulated the opening of sanatoria, the Silesian Rheumatologic Hospital and other facilities. The first segment of the Natural Medicine Institution, currently Uzdrowiskowy Instytut Zdrowia (or the Spa Institute of Health), was in operation in 1991. Four years later, brine wells U-3 and U-3A were made and they continue to work to this day.

Bathing in brine swimming pools is the essence of spa treatment, particularly in motor rehabilitation. The Ustroń brines extracted from two wells near the Spa Institute of Health are among best in Poland. Filled with 3–4% brine, the four swimming pools of the Spa Institute of Health are places for kinesiotherapy exercises. In the next year, the further sections of the Spa Institute of Health were complete, thus, ending the relocation of the health resort from Jastrzębie-Zdrój to Ustroń.

At present, Uzdrowisko Ustroń comprises four sanatoria, Równica, Kos, Narcyz and Rosomak, the three-star Wilga Hotel, the Spa Institute of Health and the luxurious treatment centre known as Medical & SPA Prestige Club. What distinguishes the health resort is the state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment, highly qualified professionals (40 physicians of different medical specialties, 90 nurses and 120 physiotherapists) and the specialist plan of therapeutic procedures tailored to individual patients’ needs. Uzdrowisko Ustroń performs over 70 types of rehabilitation procedures, including those utilising natural resources such as brine and peloid, with therapeutic properties acknowledged by relevant certificates. Uzdrowisko Ustroń has modern rehabilitation facilities, 6 kinesiotherapy rooms, 50 bath tubs for hydrotherapy and balneotherapy, 28 areas for peloid procedures, 4 swimming pools with natural brine, a brine graduation tower and 20 areas for interval training monitoring.

Patients come for rehabilitation funded fully out of the National Health Fund, rehabilitation holiday co-funded by the State Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons and charged holiday. Uzdrowisko Ustroń offers four rehabilitation programmes, i.e. cardiac, oncology, neurology and motor organs rehabilitation. The out-patient clinics operating in Uzdrowisko Ustroń provide diagnostics, specialist medical consultations and procedures carried out in the spa clinic, diabetology clinic, ophthalmology clinic, neurosis treatment clinic, densitometry laboratory and cardiac rehabilitation room.

Treatment and hotel rooms as well as a dining room and a boiler room underwent refurbishment in Uzdrowisko Ustroń within the four years after the privatisation. In the next three years, Uzdrowisko Ustroń will use further investments of over PLN 57 million. Brine swimming pools in the Spa Institute of Health will undergo refurbishment and the number of beds will rise as well. There are plans to buy one of the Ustroń pyramid resorts, which will increase the number of beds and reduce the waiting time for the treatment in Uzdrowisko Ustroń. Apart from the refurbishment of the brine swimming pools, a new swimming pool will sit near the Wilga Hotel.

Every year, 30,000 people use the services of Uzdrowisko Ustroń. The resort performs around 6,000 various procedures every day.
